Over the last few years there has been a dramatic growth in the numbers of people deciding to go abroad to obtain the best medical treatment. This so-called “medical tourism” can dramatically reduce the time spent waiting to be treated, and gives patients access to a level of medical care that they probably would not receive at home.
However, for this process to work efficiently, it is vital that the patient is followed by an experienced individual who speaks the patient’s own language. Therefore Professor Sansone has an English mother-tongue assistant who handles all patients coming from abroad, and who will be in contact with you continually throughout the process. His assistant will book your appointments, and will answer any questions you may have, helping you arrange accommodation and transport should you need it.
The Process
First of all you will have a consultation at one of Professor Sansone’s clinics in Milan. Remember to bring any X-rays or test results with you if you have them – either in hard copy format or on a CD. He will recommend a course of treatment which may be either surgical or non-surgical depending on your specific case, and a follow-up visit (normally after a few months) to see how you have responded to treatment.
If further tests are required, we can arrange for these to be performed privately in Milan, or you can arrange for them to be performed at home, sending the results to the Professor.
Surgical Treatment
If you need surgical treatment, this can be preformed either at the Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi, which is situated on the northern outskirts of Milan (see Locations), or at the Clinica Capitanio in the centre of Milan. The Professor will decide with you the best place for the operation to take place. You will be given a guideline of the costs of treatment before you need to take any decision regarding treatment.
Professor Sansone’s assistant will be available whilst you are in hospital to provide any assistance you may require, and to arrange the hire or purchase of any equipment such as crutches, braces, post-operative shoes etc.
If you are accompanied by a family member or friend, we can arrange for them to stay with you in your room, otherwise accommodation can be booked for you at a hotel nearby.
Follow-up
Professor Sansone will follow your case until you are fully recovered, and therefore you will need to come back to Milan for several follow-up consultations (depending on your case) which we will plan with you.
Private Medical Insurance
Although most of the major private medical insurance companies will reimburse you, or will pay the hospital direct, it is worthwhile checking beforehand that you are covered for treatment abroad.
